Self-care tends to be one of those things that we push to the bottom of the list. We view it as an item to do “if we have time.” And when do we ever have time for those tasks?
Let’s take a few minutes to remember why self-care is just that, caring for ourselves and why it is so important.
What is Self-Care?
Merriam-webster defines self-care as “caring for oneself.” As a mom, we are taking care of our families 24/7. It’s something we sign up for when we decide to start a family and for the most part, we enjoy it. It’s an honor to be blessed with our little people and to be in the position to raise them into well-rounded adults.
That being said, regardless of how many kids you have, it’s very easy to lose yourself in the process of taking care of others. We also often think of big things when we think about refreshing ourselves. Girls weekend, spa day, weekend away, etc. Something big, expensive, and requires scheduling weeks ahead of time.
Let me assure you, while those are examples of self-care they are not the only kinds of self-care. This article lists fifty free ideas of self-care such as taking a nap, reading a book, or decluttering. There is no such thing as a wrong way to care for yourself. What works for you might not work for me and that’s ok. For example, a lot of people drink a cup of coffee or tea as part of their morning routine because they enjoy it and it energizes them. When I drink tea, it’s only green tea and it’s only because I know it’s good for me.
A form of self-care that I do that most don’t view as self-care is planning! It’s part of who I am and it gives me a great sense of peace.
What do you enjoy? What helps you relax? Make a list of these things and refer to it any time you start feeling overwhelmed.
Why is it Important?
Have you ever heard the phrase “you can’t pour from an empty cup?” At the simplest level, this is why self-care is important. We must rest and fill our cups or we can’t take care of our people the way we want to or the way they deserve. Some benefits of regular self-care are:
-Boost your immune system & overall health
-Improved mental and emotional stability
Being healthy is about more than just what we eat and how we exercise. We need to be mentally healthy as well. You deserve it. Your family deserves it. Your business deserves it.
